Magnolia, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas volleyball squad received a match-high 12 kills from senior
Amanda Monge and limited Henderson State to a .117 (35-22-111) attacking percentage in a three-set sweep (25-21, 25-22, 25-22) Tuesday night at W.T. Watson Center.
"I thought our kids did a really good job of balancing our game," Head Coach
Steven Gream said. "This year, we've either been big-time offensive and kind of let the defense go down a little bit, or big-time defensive and let our offense go down a little bit. I thought we really kept a good balance tonight."
SAU (8-12, 5-3 GAC) trailed 5-8 early in the first set before scoring four of the next five points via two
Logan Tolbert kills, a Monge kill and a Reddie attacking error to tie the set 9-9. Teams would again tie at 12 before a
Shelby Lauterbach kill sparked a four-point run behind Monge's devastating jump serve. Monge recorded an ace before putting the Reddie's offense off balance for two straight attacking errors.
HSU (2-15, 0-7 GAC) would respond with three different three-point runs to tie the first set at 21. The Lady Muleriders would score the final four points of the set via two Monge kills, a combined block from
Taylor Reaume and
Alli O'Banion and a Reddie attack error.
The second set is when the Lady Muleriders stout defense went to work. SAU rejected six attacks for points while limiting HSU to a .051 (12-10-39) attacking percentage in the set.
The Lady Muleriders trailed 11-14 before scoring nine of the next 15 points to tie the set at 20. A Reddie attacking error followed by back-to-back SAU blocks resulted in a 3-0 SAU run. Moss and Monge would exchange kills to make the set 24-21 in SAU's favor. Moss would record another kill for the Reddies but was denied on the next point by Lauterbach and O'Banion to give the Lady Muleriders a 2-0 set lead.
The third set is when SAU's offense firepower lit up the scoreboard, recording 15 kills on 33 attempts and just five errors for an impressive .303 attacking percentage. The Lady Muleriders got 11 of the 15 kills from Monge (4), Tolbert (4) and Reaume (3).
The third set saw an early 8-8 tie and a late 21-21 tie, but the commanding demeanor of the Lady Mulerider volleyball team showed why this squad is on a five-game win streak. SAU scored two straight on a Lauterbach kill and a Moss attacking error. The Reddies would record another kill but would follow up with an attacking error before O'Banion sealed the match for SAU with an ace.
Reaume averaged 12 assists per set (36 total), and sophomore libero
Hannah Rice contributed with a team-high 16 digs in the match.
The Lady Muleriders look to extend their five-game win streak versus Arkansas Tech Thursday at 6 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum.
