Lady Muleriders split matches at Drury Tri-Match

Springfield, Mo. – The Southern Arkansas volleyball team overcame dropping the first set to sweep the next three sets versus Quincy (17-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23) and fell in three sets versus host Drury (13-25, 15-25, 15-25) in a doubleheader at Weiser Gym Saturday night.

"I think this weekend helped us as far as for teams that will pound the ball such as Southern Nazarene," Head Coach Steven Gream said. "This weekend also better prepared us for tips and blocks for our match against Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday. These two teams did some things that are similar to the teams we face next week."

Southern Arkansas 3, Quincy 1

With SAU (9-13) trailing 4-6 in the first set, Quincy (4-15) would score six of the next eight points via three kills and three Lady Mulerider errors. The Hawks would take the first set after SAU attacked at a -.024 (7-8-42) clip.

After a rough first set, the Lady Muleriders jumped out to a 7-1 lead on four kills, a block and two Hawk attacking errors. That early lead allowed SAU to hold the advantage throughout the set, led by junior Shelby Lauterbach and sophomore Hailey McNee's four kills, and tie the match at one set apiece.

The Lady Muleriders made a five-point run in the third set to hold a commanding 16-10 lead. The Hawks would pull within four at 17-21, but that is when senior Amanda Monge, who has been a consistent force for SAU all season, took matters into her own hands.

Monge not only scored three of the final four points via kills to ignite a four-point run that iced the pivotal third set for the Lady Muleriders. The senior from Porterville, California, fired nine kills in the third set on 14 attempts and committed just one error, good for an astounding .571 attacking percentage.

Quincy took an early 7-3 lead in the fourth set, but SAU showed once again why it is one of the most resilient teams in the country. Still down by four at 15-19, the Lady Muleriders tied the match at 19 after two blocks and two kills turned the tables on the Hawks.

With the set tied at 23, junior setter Taylor Reaume snuck a kill through the Hawk frontline and Quincy committed an attacking error on the next point to see the Lady Muleriders come from behind, like many other teams have, and walk away with the win.

Monge finished with a game-high 16 kills while sophomore libero Hannah Rice nearly matched a career-high with 30 digs in the four-set match. Reaume recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 46 assists and 14 digs, and Lauterbach and McNee converted on nine kills. O'Banion showed why the move to middle has been extremely valuable, recording a career-high eight blocks.

Drury 3, Southern Arkansas 0

After SAU (9-14) took a 12-11 lead on a Reaume kill in the first set, Drury (9-8) would score 14 of the next 15 points via six kills, five Lady Mulerider errors and three blocks. The Panthers limited the Lady Muleriders to a .050 attacking percentage in the second set and attacked at an impressive .536 (16-1-28) clip in the third set to take the next two sets by a score of 25-15 to seal the match.

Lauterbach and McNee recorded a team-high six kills for the Lady Muleriders.

SAU continues its road trip versus conference opponent Ouachita Baptist Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Sturgis Physical Education Center.
