Lady Muleriders break losing skid with dominating 79-55 win over Arkansas-Monticello

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a dominant 79-55 win over Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday night in the W.T. Watson Center in Magnolia.
 
Helping the Lady Muleriders (8-8, 4-6 GAC) to their lopsided win over the Cotton Blossoms (5-11, 1-9 GAC) was an efficient and balanced offensive attack. As a team, the Lady Muleriders shot 53% (32-of-61) from the floor. Individually, 11 different Lady Muleriders scored in the game with five reaching double figures.
 
Junior forward Barvion Wyatt led the team in scoring with 18 points. Behind Wyatt was Stevi Cooper with 11 points. Katherine McBride, Chanel Miller, and Mariam Ridgwell each added 10 points.
 
Despite the final score, the first 13 minutes of the game were closely contested as there seven tie scores and five lead changes. The final tie score and subsequent lead change game at the 6:59 mark of the first half when UAM's Jordan Goforth made a layup to knot the game at 20-all.
 
On their ensuing possession, the Lady Muleriders would push back on top on a good jumper by Miller. That bucket by Miller started an 8-0 run and gave the Lady Muleriders the game's final lead change. From there, the Lady Muleriders would grab a double-digit lead before halftime, but went into the break leading by nine points, 38-29.
 
In the second half it did not take long for the Lady Muleriders to get their lead back to double-digits as Wyatt got a steal and fastbreak layup on the first possession of the half. From there, the Lady Muleriders would continue to knock down shots as they swelled their lead to as much as 28 points before ending with a 24-point margin of victory.
 
The Lady Muleriders will look to build on this win as they will remain at home to take on Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, January 25. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
