ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas men's basketball team fell into in an early hole against Henderson State and were not able to climb out of it as the Reddies handed the Muleriders a 68-83 loss on Thursday night in the Duke Wells Center.
The Muleriders (6-8, 3-6 GAC) scored the game's first points on a layup by
Tyrell Taylor, but the Reddies (8-9, 4-5 GAC) took over from there as their offense caught fire early. The Reddies would make their first four three-point attempts of the game as they surged ahead of the Muleriders by double digits with just over 15 minutes left in the opening half.
HSU would continue to build on that lead, opening it up to as much as 24 points late in the first half before the Reddies headed into the break with a 17-point lead, 46-29.
The Muleriders would not go easily in the second half as they battled back and cut their deficit down to single digits on a couple of occasions late in the half. The comeback effort by the Muleriders could not get SAU any closer than nine points, however, as the Reddies kept up their efficient shooting in the second half.
As a team, the Muleriders would shoot the ball fairly well as the ended the game shooting at a clip of 47%.
Jeffrey Walker led the team in scoring as he scored 24 points off of the bench. Walker's 24 points came on the strength of 9-of-11 shooting from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Taylor and
Alre'k Brown would join Walker in double figures as Taylor scored 15 points and Brown added 14 points of his own.
The Muleriders will be back in action on Thursday, January 23 as they play host to rivals Arkansas-Monticello. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the W.T. Watson Center.
