BETHANY, Okla. – A 1-for-16 shooting start by the Southern Arkansas women's basketball team proved to be too much to overcome as Southern Nazarene never trailed in the game en route to working past SAU by a score of 86-68 in Great American Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
The early shooting woes for the Lady Muleriders (7-5, 3-3 GAC) stretched over the first 8:30 of the game and allowed the Crimson Storm (7-6, 4-3 GAC) to build a double-digit lead. The Lady Muleriders would begin to bounce back from that start and pulled to within six points, 20-14 at the 7:34 mark of the first half.
From there, however, the Crimson Storm would extend their first half lead to as much as 19 points, 38-19, as they outscored the Lady Muleriders 18-5 over the next 5:30 of the opening half. The Crimson Storm would later take a 17-point lead into the break, 42-25.
The second half would be a better in terms of shooting for the Lady Muleriders as they raised their overall field goal percentage from 27% (9-of-33) in the first half to 43% (17-of-40). Despite the improved shooting, the Lady Muleriders were unable to put a significant dent in their deficit as the Crimson Strom remained solid in all areas of their shooting.
Three players would end in double figures for the Lady Muleriders with
Chanel Miller leading the way with 14 points off the bench.
Barvion Wyatt, who scored a season-high 21 points in her last game, was next with 12 points.
Miranda Grier rounded out double-figure scoring with an even 10 points.
As a team, the Lady Muleriders did force the Crimson Storm to commit 28 turnovers with 18 being forced by the steal. Wyatt led the way in that category with five steals.
Allie Wade was next on the team with four steals.
The Lady Muleriders will now prepare for a road clash with unbeaten and nationally-ranked No.8 Harding University on Thursday, January 16. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Searcy.
