DURANT, Okla. – After dropping the first game of Friday's doubleheader to Southeastern Oklahoma by a score of 5-2, the No. 16-ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team bounced back and evened the series with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
That game-two win was thanks, in large part, to a solid pitching performance from starter
James Baune. Baune, who improved to 7-1 on the year, would go the distance in the seven-inning contest. In his time on the mound, Baune was able to scatter six hits and work around four additional base runners throughout the game as he limited the Savage Storm (17-12, 10-7 GAC) to just one earned run.
The Muleriders (24-11, 15-5 GAC) gave Baune run support in the fourth inning when they were able to break through against Southeastern starter Eddie Cervantes. In that inning, the Muleriders capitalized on a fielding error by the catcher and scored three runs in the wake of that error. The first run came on a RBI fielder's choice hit into by
Ryan Dardenne. After a walk to
Tyler Cameron in the next at-bat
Telvin Darden tripled to right-centerfield to score both Dardenne and Cameron.
A bases loaded walk to Dardenne in the next inning chased home
Jason Dahl and extended the lead out to 4-0. An inning later, in the top of the sixth inning, the Muleriders added another run of insurance as an error by the Savage Storm's third baseman allowed Darden to score, making it a 5-0 Mulerider lead.
In the bottom of the frame, the Savage Storm would end the shutout bid by Baune as they scored a run on a fielder's choice by Aaron Chalk. That run would prove to be the only one the Savage Storm could muster off of Baune as he got out of the sixth inning without any further damage. Baune then came out in the bottom of the seventh and worked around a two-out single to secure the complete-game victory.
In the opener, it was a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt in the third inning by starter
Philip Menou that proved to be the Muleriders' undoing as the three runs that followed in the frame were the difference in the game as the Savage Storm won by a score of 5-2.
The rubber match of the series is set to be played Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first-pitch.
