MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas women's basketball team led from the midway point of the first half to the midway point of the second half on Saturday afternoon at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center as the Lady Muleriders fought hard against visiting Southeastern Oklahoma in a losing effort, 89-80.
The 80-point scoring output by the Lady Muleriders (0-20, 0-15) is the highest scoring total for the team this season.
Fueling that scoring watermark was a three-point barrage by the Lady Muleriders as they used seven made three-pointers in the first half to help erase a 12-point deficit midway through the opening period. The proficiency from beyond the arc resulted in the Lady Muleriders taking a five-point lead into halftime, 43-38.
SAU would maintain a lead until the 12:40 mark of the second half when the Savage Storm (9-12, 7-8 GAC) pulled out in front on a made layup by Brena Small-Peppers. The Lady Muleriders would momentarily regain the lead about a minute later when
Jordan Redmond knocked down a mid-range jumper.
The game's final lead change came with 11:35 remaining in the game as Emily Williams drained a three-pointer for Southeastern. From there, the Savage Storm would grow their lead out to as much as 11 points before ending with a nine-point margin of victory.
Statistically, the Lady Muleriders has five players score in double figures with
Shelbi Cottingham leading the way with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Stevi Cooper was the second-leading scorer with 13 points. Behind Cooper was
Bria Snowden with 12 points.
Katherine McBride and
Kathryn Odom each added 11 points.
As a team, the Lady Muleriders dished out a season-high 19 assists with Cooper leading the effort with seven assists.
The Lady Muleriders will now take to the road as they will travel to Bethany, Okla. to take on Southern Nazarene University on Thursday, February 14th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
