ANGELO, Texas
– Behind 4-0 through the first inning of Saturday's opening game of a doubleheader, the No. 11 Southern Arkansas baseball team roared back with a 17-hit bombardment en route to a 17-8 win against No. 14 Angelo State. Southern Arkansas would drop the second game of the twin-bill by a score of 7-4 as Angelo State captured the highly-touted series, 2-1.

After falling into the early hole in game one, the Muleriders' (5-2) pitching staff was able to settle down while the offense began to hit their way back into the game over the next few innings.

The furious comeback by the Muleriders started in the top of the third inning as SAU cut their deficit in half, 4-2. Jackson McCurdy was responsible for both of the runs in the inning as his two-out single drove in Tyler Cameron and Jason Dahl. An inning later, the Muleriders captured the lead, 5-4, as they plated three runs on three hits.

The Rams (6-1), however, answered back with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the frame to go back in front by a score of 7-5.

In the next half inning, the back-and-forth affair continued as the Muleriders recaptured the lead, 8-7, by scoring three more runs. All three of the Muleriders' runs in the inning came on a three-run bomb off the bat of Ryan Bell.

After holding the Rams off the board in the bottom of the fifth, the Muleriders extended their lead out to 10-7 as Ryan Dardenne belted a two-run homerun out to left-centerfield. The Rams would plate a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull to within two runs, 10-8.

The two-run Mulerider lead heading into the top of the seventh inning suddenly became a nine-run lead as the Muleriders scored seven runs on five hits. The back-breaking blow came on a grand slam homerun off the bat of Brady Capshaw.

Justin Thomas, who came on with no outs and a runner on in the bottom of the sixth inning, earned his fourth save of the season as he closed the door with a scoreless seventh inning.

In the nightcap, the Rams jumped out to another early lead as they scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, the Muleriders tied the game as Dahl drove in Chris Quinn on a groundout.
An inning later, the Muleriders took a two-run lead, 3-1, as Dardenne hammered his second two-run homerun of the day out to left-centerfield. That lead would hold until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Rams scored three runs on three hits to take a 4-3 lead.

The Rams would out-score the Muleriders 3-1 over the next four innings as they held on to win the rubber game of the series by a score of 7-4.

The Muleriders will return home for a single nine-inning game against Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday, February 12th. The game will be a non-conference affair and is slated to have a first-pitch of 2:00 p.m.
