Lady Muleriders fall to Lady Tigers in home opener

Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Monica Williams scored a game-high 21 points as Ouachita Baptist spoiled Southern Arkansas' home opener with a 74-66 win in Great American Conference action Thursday at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.

The young Lady Muleriders (0-6, 0-3 GAC) hit the 60-point plateau for the first time this season, but still suffered their 15th consecutive loss dating back to last year.  The Lady Tigers (5-1, 3-0 GAC) remain perfect in league play with their fifth straight win.
 
Williams led four OBU players in double-figure scoring.  Nashia James scored 15 points, Elise Holman added 13 and eight rebounds, and Katherine West finished with 10 points.
 
Junior guard Stevi Cooper (Reno, Nev.) paced SAU with 16 points and had seven rebounds.  Sophomore guard Katherine McBride (Lucas, Texas) scored 14 points, and freshman center Tori Nichols (Houston, Miss.) recorded her first double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
 
Southern Arkansas stood its ground over the first 26 minutes of play, down just 37-32 at the half, and trailing only 46-45 at 14:07 in the second half.  But Ouachita Baptist went on a 22-9 run from there for a 68-54 margin at 4:43.  Holman started it with four consecutive points.
 
The Lady Muleriders got back within single digits at 72-63 with 1:27 remaining, and sophomore guard Bria Snowden (El Dorado) drained a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final eight-point margin.
 
SAU stayed within six points at the outset of the game and took its lone lead of 20-19 on two free throws from sophomore guard Kathryn Odom (Allen, Texas) at 8:35.
 
The Lady Tigers won it at the free throw line, getting 17 more trips than Southern Arkansas in hitting 27 of 44 for 61.4 percent.  The Lady Muleriders were 13 of 27 (48.1 percent).  SAU was whistled for 29 fouls to 20 for OBU.
 
Ouachita Baptist shot 43.4 percent for the game on 23 of 53 from the floor, taking only three attempts from beyond the arc and hitting one.  Southern Arkansas finished at 34.2 percent on 25 of 73, connecting on just 3 of 17 three-pointers.
 
The Lady Muleriders remain at home Saturday, hosting Henderson State in a 2 p.m. conference game.
