Lady Muleriders fall 59-53 to Lady Magicians

Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A late second half run by LeMoyne-Owen allowed them to pull away for a 59-53 win over Southern Arkansas Saturday at the Bruce/Johnson Hall Gymnasium.
 
The Lady Muleriders fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Lady Magicians (1-2) picked up their first win.
 
LeMoyne got 19 points apiece from Teneshia Jones and NaTasha Farr, with Farr posting a double-double with 11 rebounds.  Karen Barr recorded her own double as well, with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
SAU was led by junior guard Stevi Cooper's (Reno, Nev.) 15 points.  Sophomore guard Katherine McBride (Lucas, Texas) scored 13.
 
After trailing 23-17 at the half, Southern Arkansas began the second with an 11-3 run for its first and only leads of the game.  Cooper's consecutive jumpers gave them 26-25 and 28-26 advantages at the 17-minute mark.  Farr then scored seven of the Lady Magicians' next nine points over an eight-minute span to push it to a 35-28 game.
 
The Lady Muleriders battled back though, with Cooper's jumper tying it 43-43 with three minutes remaining.  But LeMoyne-Owen rattled off an 11-2 run for a 54-45 game at 1:21 and SAU was never closer than five points the rest of the way.
 
The Lady Magicians led throughout the first half, building 10-point margins three times, the last (22-12) coming at 6:23, before Southern Arkansas cut it to 23-17 at the break.
 
LeMoyne won it at the foul stripe, hitting 29 of 49.  The Lady Muleriders were whistled for 30 fouls, while only 17 were called against the home team.  SAU was 6 of 12 at the free throw line.
 
The Lady Magicians shot just 27.8 percent from the floor, connecting on 15 of 54, and missing all four three-point attempts.  Southern Arkansas was 22 of 65 for 33.8 percent, hitting only 3 of 21 (14.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
 
The Lady Muleriders held a 45-40 rebound advantage, with sophomore forward Lauren Jay (San Antonio, Texas) pulling down eight.
 
SAU travels Tuesday to Bolivar, Mo., for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off against Southwest Baptist.
