Box Score COMMERCE, Texas – The Southern Arkansas women's basketball team got off to a rocky start in its 2012-13 season, falling 76-57 to Texas A&M-Commerce Wednesday at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
Breanna Harris torched the Lady Muleriders with a double-double of 30 points and 15 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards, in what was also the Lions' season-opener. Kourtney Briscoe added 13 points.
Sophomore guard
Katherine McBride (Lucas, Texas) had a team-leading 13 points, six rebounds and four assists for SAU, and was the only player in double-figure scoring.
Southern Arkansas held a brief four-minute lead early in the first half, up 10-8 at the 15:33 mark, before a 32-10 run by A&M-Commerce the remainder of the half gave them a 40-20 advantage at the break, with Harris scoring 16 points in that span.
The Lions commanded their largest lead of 46-20 at 17:19 in the second stanza, and the Lady Muleriders were never closer than a 15-point margin of 67-52 with 3:28 left.
Texas A&M-Commerce shot 35.8 percent for the game on 24 of 67 and was 25 of 33 at the free throw line for 75.8 percent. SAU was 18 of 49 (36.7 percent) from the floor and 16 of 24 (66.7 percent) at the foul stripe.
The Lions held a 52-33 rebound advantage and forced 26 Southern Arkansas turnovers that they converted into 32 points, while the Lady Muleriders got only 12 points off 17 A&M-Commerce miscues.
Sophomore guards
Bria Snowden (El Dorado) and
Kathryn Odom (Allen, Texas) finished with eight points apiece for SAU, and sophomore forward
Lauren Jay (San Antonio, Texas) had five rebounds.
Southern Arkansas travels Saturday to Memphis, Tenn., for a 5:30 p.m. meeting with LeMoyne-Owen College, which has had season-opening losses to Rust College (70-46) and Arkansas-Monticello (85-46).
