SAU Golf’s Kade Johnson tabbed as GAC’s Men’s Golfer of the Week

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Following the first individual title of his career, Southern Arkansas' Kade Johnson has been named the Great American Conference's Men's Golfer of the Week following an impressive showing at the 36-hole Arkansas Collegiate on Monday and Tuesday. It is the second weekly honor for Johnson this season after claiming the award following his performance at the Hurricane Invitational in late February.

A native of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Johnson shot an opening round 74 (+2), but finished with a tournament-best 70 (-2) in day two to top second-place finisher, Golfstat's No. 3 golfer in Southeastern Oklahoma's Zach James, by four strokes. His performance, especially as one of three golfers to shoot under par in the second round, helped then-No. 29 Southern Arkansas hold off surging No. 14 Henderson State and No. 41 Southeastern Oklahoma State to earn its second-consecutive tournament win and third this season; both of which are program records.

Johnson led the 48-golfer tournament field in par-4 scoring at -2. No other player was better than +4 on par-4 scoring. Additionally, Johnson posted a +1 on both par-3 and par-5 scoring, while making par on 24 holes.

His seven birdies in the tournament moved the Canadian into third-place all-time in program history in the category. He currently has produced 160 birdies in his three-year career. His two-under 70 in round two marked the 17th par or better round for the junior which improves his career program record.

With the individual victory, Johnson became the tenth Mulerider to win a tournament since 2003.

Johnson and the Muleriders are back in action on Monday, March 18 for the Broncho Invitational hosted by Central Oklahoma at the Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma. Southern Arkansas will play 54 holes, pending weather, across Monday and Tuesday against some of the top competition in the region.
