Steve Browning enters his 15th year leading Southern Arkansas University Athletics in 2026-27. Since assuming leadership of Mulerider Athletics in the fall of 2011, Browning has overseen one of the most successful periods in the department's history, highlighted by unprecedented competitive success, record academic achievement, nationally recognized community engagement, transformational facility development, and significant private fundraising.
 
Under Browning's leadership, Southern Arkansas Athletics has won 38 conference championships across multiple sports since the spring of 2012. Prior to Browning’s tenure, SAU won four championships from the time it became an NCAA Division II institution in 1995 through the fall of 2011.
 
That success has also been reflected in the Great American Conference All-Sports Standings. After finishing ninth in the inaugural standings in 2011-12, Southern Arkansas has developed into one of the GAC's most consistently successful overall athletic programs. Since 2015-16, SAU has finished among the top five in the conference in every All-Sports Standings, including six top-three finishes and runner-up finishes in 2018-19 and 2024-25.
 
Success under Browning's leadership extends well beyond competition. Mulerider student-athletes established a department-record 3.38 cumulative GPA in the spring of 2026, surpassing the previous record of 3.37 set in the fall of 2025. The spring semester marked the third consecutive semester in which every SAU athletic program maintained a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Additionally, 259 student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher, 90 were named to the Dean's List, and 85 earned President's List honors.
 
Community engagement has also become a defining characteristic of Mulerider Athletics. During the 2025-26 academic year, Southern Arkansas ranked first among all NCAA Division II athletic departments in total community service hours. SAU's 16 programs combined for 13,940 hours of service, with 100 percent student-athlete participation across 183 service opportunities benefiting 36 organizations. Those efforts represented an estimated economic impact of $503,791.
 
Browning's commitment to community engagement dates back to the beginning of his tenure. In 2012, he spearheaded the "Muleriders in Magnolia" initiative to strengthen the relationship between SAU Athletics and the Magnolia community. The initiative received national recognition in 2013 when Southern Arkansas was presented with the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for Community Engagement.
 
Browning has also played a central role in one of the most significant periods of athletic facility development in university history. More than $20 million in facility enhancements have been completed during his tenure, with at least 80 percent of the funding for those projects generated through private support.
 
Among the major projects completed during Browning's tenure are the two-field softball complex at Dawson Field at the Dr. Margaret Downing Complex; renovation of the track and field facility; extensive improvements to the W.T. Watson Center; revitalization of the eight Live Oaks Tennis Courts and construction of a tennis/golf clubhouse; artificial turf, LED lighting and the 7,500-square-foot Johnson Dawson Player Development Facility at baseball; artificial turf, LED lighting and video board improvements at Rip Powell Field; a 2,500-square-foot athletic training facility; the 33,000-square-foot Dawson Athletic Complex; and the 10,000-square-foot Norm DeBriyn Athletics Operations Facility and Murphy USA Student-Athlete Academic Success Center.
 
More recent improvements have included new video boards and Champion Walls at baseball and softball, additional stadium seating at softball, a complete renovation of Wilkins Stadium, and the installation of Pivot Performance Turf at Rip Powell Field, making Southern Arkansas the first NCAA Division II institution in the nation to install the playing surface.
 
Browning's ability to cultivate relationships with alumni, donors, corporate partners, and friends of the university has played an important role in that growth. His relationship-building and fundraising efforts have helped generate significant private investment in Mulerider Athletics, including cultivating the relationship that resulted in the largest individual donor commitment in Southern Arkansas University history.
 
Prior to transitioning fully into athletics administration, Browning enjoyed a highly successful career with Mulerider Baseball. He served as SAU's head baseball coach from 2011 through 2016 while also serving as Director of Athletics during the final years of his coaching tenure. As head coach, Browning compiled a 224-107 record (.677), won five conference tournament championships and three regular-season championships, and led the Muleriders to five NCAA Regional Tournament appearances.
 
Browning's association with Mulerider Baseball began when he arrived at Southern Arkansas as a student-athlete in the fall of 1998 following two years at Crowder College. During his 18 years associated with the SAU baseball program as a player and coach, Browning was part of 709 victories, 12 regular-season or conference tournament championships, and 10 NCAA Regional Tournament appearances. In 2017, he was inducted into the Crowder College Athletics Hall of Fame.
 
A 2001 graduate of Southern Arkansas, Browning holds four degrees from SAU: a Bachelor of Science in Education in health, kinesiology and recreation and Master of Education degrees in kinesiology, education administration and supervision, and special education.
 
A graduate of Sheridan High School, Browning has called Magnolia home since arriving at Southern Arkansas in 1998. He is married to the former Brandy Nicholson of Strong, and they have two sons, Cade and Mason.
