Dan Veach begins his 20th season in 2007-08 as head cross country and track and field coach at Southern Arkansas. An alumnus of SAU, Veach was a member of a Mulerider quarter-mile relay team that placed fourth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship meet in 1966 with a time of 40.8. He was one of three captains for Southern Arkansas in 1968 and ’69, was a four-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) selection, and was a three-time NAIA All-American (1966-1968).
Veach completed his B.S.E. in 1969 and received his master’s degree from Auburn University in 1975. He began his career in education as a social studies teacher at Emerson High School, where also initiated a track and field program. Veach’s teams at Emerson captured three cross country and three track and field state championships. He also served as the principal at Emerson from 1981-1988.
In addition to his coaching duties at SAU, Veach is an assistant professor of education and director of all field experience of student teachers.
While at Southern Arkansas, Veach coached 84 All-AIC picks and 28 track and field All-Americans. Five women’s teams won AIC championships and the men’s program finished runner-up four times. In 1992, the Mulerider 400-meter relay team won the NAIA national championship title in Abbotslord, Canada. Veach was named the AIC Coach of the Year five times.
Since moving to NCAA Division II and joining the Gulf South Conference in 1996, Veach, in cross country, has coached 11 Lady Mulerider All-GSC selections and one All-South Region pick, and 11 Mulerider all-conference and two all-region honorees.
Veach and his wife, Ann, have two daughters, Dana and Sidney.
