SAU Women Lose Exhibition to Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – Southern Arkansas ran into a Division I brick wall as the Lady Muleriders fell by a 95-42 margin to Arkansas State Tuesday in an exhibition game at the Convocation Center.

Meghan Lewis scored 18 points and Sherina Scott posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Red Wolves’ charge.

Sophomore centers Kmaria Hobbs (Clarksville, Texas) and newcomer Shenelda Levingston (El Dorado) both came close to doubles themselves for SAU, with Hobbs recording 11 points and nine rebounds, while Levingston had nine and 11.

Arkansas State led 43-12 at the half and shot 51.4 percent (38 of 74) for the game, including 5 of 15 three-pointers. Southern Arkansas connected on just 13 of 52 from the floor for 25 percent and hit only 3 of 18 from downtown.

SAU stayed with the Red Wolves on the board, trailing only 46-42 in the rebound margin, but missed too many shots and committed 35 turnovers. ASU had five blocked shots in the game.

Southern Arkansas Coach Sam Biley played all 12 players on his roster, including five newcomers. Freshman forward Raven Jones also had nine rebounds in the game and scored six points.

Arkansas State had four members that scored in double-figures, also getting 13 points from Ebonie Jefferson and 12 from Linsay Henke. The Red Wolves defeated fellow Gulf South Conference member Christian Brothers, 95-49, a week ago in their other exhibition game.

The Lady Muleriders open their regular season Monday, hosting Jarvis Christian (Texas) College at 5:30 p.m. in the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.
