MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas placed three members on the 2008 All-Gulf South Conference Softball Team, released Wednesday by the league office. The Lady Muleriders are Joanna Jones.JPGrepresented by second baseman Joanna Jones and utility player Cheyenne Savony on the first team, while first baseman Kirstie Reed was a second team selection.

Jones, a 5-5 senior from Needville, Texas (Bossier Parish CC), garners first team honors for the second consecutive year. She led this year’s squad by hitting .392 with six home runs and a .600 slugging percentage. Jones also was the team leader with 29 runs scored, 49 hits, 23 stolen bases, and had a .444 on-base percentage. She also added six doubles, a triple, and finished with 16 RBI from her leadoff spot.

Savony, a 5-6 senior out of Kilgore, Texas, was the team’s leading pitcher and played left field Cheyenne Savony.JPGwhen she wasn’t in the circle. She hit .319, led SAU with eight doubles, had a home run and 14 RBI, and a team-high 13 walks. Savony had 16 starts in 28 appearances in the circle, compiling a 5-12 record with a 4.12 ERA. Her 10 complete games and 66 strikeouts led the staff. Savony was a second team all-conference pick in 2005.

A 5-9 senior from Little Rock, Reed hit .323 with six doubles, five home runs, and a team-best Kirstie Reed.JPG21 RBI. She had a .535 slugging percentage and led the squad defensively with a .986 fielding percentage.

Arkansas Tech’s Dana Aldrich was selected as both the West Division Player and Pitcher of the Year, while Ouachita Baptist utility player Kristen Rigsbee was named the West Freshman of the Year. Tech’s Gidget Pambianchi received the West Coach of the Year honor.
