[March 2, 2008] By: Houston Taylor MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Host Pittsburg State (Kan.) posted a five-inning, 11-0 shutout against Southern Arkansas in their first game Saturday at the Pittsburg State Softball Classic II. The Lady Muleriders then suffered an 11-8 setback by Northwest Missouri State, before ending Saturday’s play with a 9-1 win over Missouri Southern State. SAU wrapped up action Sunday, losing 6-0 to No. 7 Nebraska-Omaha, to finish 1-3 in the classic. Sunday afternoon’s game with Henderson State was canceled. In the Pittsburg State (3-4) contest, Tiffany Swanson and Melissa Slayden combined to toss the shutout, allowing just two Southern Arkansas hits. Swanson (2-0) threw four innings in picking up the win, allowing one hit and striking out one. Cheyenne Savony (2-2) was tagged with the loss in four innings of work. She gave up 10 hits, 10 runs of which nine were earned, and four walks, while fanning three. Kirstie Reed and Sarah Holub had the Lady Muleriders’ two hits. No game information was immediately available on SAU’s other three games, but will be posted as it is received. Southern Arkansas (5-7) begins Gulf South Conference play Thursday when they travel to Henderson State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Lady Reddies make a return trip Saturday for the Lady Muleriders’ home opener in a 2 p.m. doubleheader. |
