ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas took control early and cruised past Montevallo (Ala.), 66-50, Sunday in the Henderson State Classic at the Duke Wells Center.
Other than the Falcons (2-5) getting a rebound tip-in to open the scoring, the Lady Muleriders (2-5) led throughout in picking up their second victory of the season. Junior guard Goldie White’s tip-in at 7:48 gave SAU its largest lead in the first half at 26-16. UM then got two free throws and a lay-up from Aureli Derenoncourt to cut it to 26-20 and that’s the way it stayed until the half. Neither club scored for the final 6:51 of the half, combining for 17 missed shots, with Montevallo blanking on 10 attempts and also four free throws.
Southern Arkansas took a 37-23 advantage in the first four minutes of the second frame and held an 18-point margin on freshman center Kmaria Hobbs’ jumper with 39 ticks left, before the Falcons’ Wakesha Searight set the final score with her jumper.
Hobbs and White set the pace for the Lady Muleriders, combining for 42 points and 17 rebounds. Hobbs finished with game-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double this season. She has scored in double figures in every game this year.
White, who recorded 20 points and seven boards, has been on a tear as of late, posting her fourth consecutive game of 20-plus points, averaging 25.5 over that span.
Junior guard Lynzi Williams tossed out five assists and senior guard Shanaye Davis had six steals in the contest.
SAU was 26 of 64 from the floor for 40.6 percent, knocking down 7 of 17 (41.2) three-pointers, and hit 7 of 13 (53.8) free throws. UM was 18 of 50 (36.0), missing all 11 attempts from downtown, and was 14 of 26 (53.8) at the charity stripe.
Montevallo held a 42-35 rebound advantage, but Southern Arkansas forced 22 Falcon turnovers that they converted into 20 points. The Lady Muleriders had just 12 turnovers.
Carrie Parrott had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead UM, while Katie Vanderhyden added 11 and eight, respectively. Montevallo’s 50 points were its lowest output of the season.
SAU continues play in the classic Monday, facing Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) at 5 p.m.
