MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Following last week’s 6-4 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State, Southern Arkansas slipped one spot to a tie for second in this week’s Collegiate Baseball coaches’ poll that was released Monday. The Muleriders also dropped to second in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association (NCBWA) poll released today, but remain the No. 1 team in the nation in the Ping! poll.

SAU (33-4), which had its 21-game winning streak snapped in the opener of last Tuesday’s home doubleheader with the Savage Storm, bounced back to take the nightcap and then swept a three-game series at Arkansas Tech over the weekend to go 4-1 for the week.

Southern Arkansas, with 462 points in the coaches’ poll, fell into the tie with Sonoma State (Calif.) (32-4), who was 3-1 on the week. Mount Olive (N.C.) (37-4) jumped back into the top spot with 468 points, playing only one game during the week and winning it. Tampa (Fla.) (28-6-1) stayed at fourth, while Emporia State (Kan.) (32-3) moved up one spot to fifth.

Using a three-game sweep at home over Henderson State, Gulf South Conference West Division foe Delta State (Miss.) (27-8) vaulted from 11th to sixth. GSC East members Valdosta State (Ga.) (25-11-1) and West Alabama (33-8) are 18th and 20th, respectively, and West rival Ouachita Baptist (35-7) is 21st.

Ping! gave the Muleriders credit for bouncing back to win four straight in keeping them atop their weekly poll. Mount Olive is second, Tampa third, Franklin Pierce (N.H.) (20-3) fourth, and Delta State rounds out their top five. Ouachita Baptist and West Alabama are ninth and 10th, respectively. Valdosta State moves into the poll at 25th, as does West Georgia (27-10) at 26th.

SAU was out-pointed 264-262 by Mount Olive in the NCBWA poll. Sonoma State, Tampa, and Emporia State round out the top five. Southern Arkansas is still first in the NCBWA’s South Central Region poll, receiving all six first-place votes.

The first weekly NCAA regional polls will be released Wednesday.
