[October 19, 2007] Contact: Houston Taylor, SID MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Southern Arkansas picked up its first Gulf South Conference road win of the season in knocking off Christian Brothers 3-1 (30-28, 30-25, 28-30, 30-20) Friday at Canale Arena. In fact, it was the first victory on the road for the Lady Muleriders (8-18, 4-5 GSC) since a 3-1 decision at East Texas Baptist on September 4, breaking a 12-match road losing streak. More importantly, with their second consecutive win, SAU stayed just a game back of Ouachita Baptist, who defeated Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday, for the final berth in the post-season conference tournament. Southern Arkansas’ win gave them a season sweep of the Lady Buccaneers (10-19, 0-9), having defeated them earlier in the season in Magnolia. Red-shirt freshman Maggie Ross posted a career and match-high 19 kills for the Lady Muleriders, connecting at a .341 clip. Senior Kristina Daily added 13 kills while hitting .357, and Shelly Jones chipped in 11. Daily, who set the SAU career attack record Tuesday against Arkansas Tech, is now just 17 kills shy of holding that school career mark. Andrea Spradlin and Kayli Kerr put up 26 and 18 assists, respectively, for Southern Arkansas. Jones was all over the floor for a match-high 34 digs, the third 30+ dig match in her four-year career, and second best overall. Other than scoring, Ross also had five blocks at the net, as did Sarah Bell. Jenna Cherry led CBU with 15 kills, while Aubrey Pancratz pounded 11. Brenna Blackburn tossed up 46 assists, Bridget Buckley had 22 digs, and Cherry added seven blocks. The Lady Muleriders shoot for their third straight win Tuesday when they travel to face Arkansas-Monticello in a 7 p.m. match. |
