MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas stormed back from down two games to overtake Christian Brothers for a 3-2 Gulf South Conference win (24-30, 26-30, 34-32, 30-20, 15-9) Sunday at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.
It was the third consecutive win for the Lady Muleriders after suffering a 10-match losing streak. SAU improves to 6-13 on the season, and most importantly, to 2-2 in GSC play. The Lady Buccaneers fall to 10-12 and are still winless in conference play at 0-4.
After dropping the first two games, Southern Arkansas hung tough and bounced back with a pivotal 34-32 decision in the third frame. Momentum from that win catapulted them to a relatively easy fourth game victory which carried over into the deciding fifth contest.
Kristina Daily matched CBU’s Aubrey Pancratz with a match-high 18 kills, including eight over the final two games. Shelly Jones and Cristina Correa added 12 and 10 kills, respectively, for the Lady Muleriders. Kayli Kerr served up 29 assists, while Andrea Spradlin chipped in 25, and Correa added three service aces.
Mallory McKee posted a season-high 38 digs, equaling her second highest single-match total in her career. It was her 10th career match with 30-plus digs. Maggie Ross led at the net with seven blocks.
Other than Pancratz’s 18 kills, Christian Brothers got 14 from Hanna Orendorff and 11 from Jenna Cherry. Brenna Blackburn tossed up 58 assists in the match. Bridget Buckley led a quintet of Lady Bucs with 23 digs. Cherry and Michelle Hein added 20 each, Danielle Gennett had 12, and Blackburn chipped in 11. Pancratz and Orendorff each had five blocks.
SAU continues league action Tuesday when they host Henderson State in a 7 p.m. match.
