NATCHITOCHES, La. – A total of eight schools and partial squads from three others competed Saturday in the Northwestern State (La.) Invitational at the Walter P. Ledet Track Complex. Host Northwestern State won both the men’s and women’s divisions, while Southern Arkansas’ men finished eighth in the 11-team field and the women were seventh of eight teams.

The Demons piled up 125 points in claiming the men’s title, outpacing Louisiana Tech (104) and Sam Houston State (91). Stephen F. Austin State (74) was fourth, Lamar (69) finished fifth, Louisiana-Lafayette (52) placed sixth, and Texas-Tyler (13) was seventh. The Muleriders got nine points in finishing eighth, McNeese State (6) was ninth, Centenary (4) was 10th, and Louisiana State (1), with limited performers, rounded out the field.

SAU, competing only in running events, got a seventh-place finish from Nathan Hall (9:20.65) in the 3,000 meter run. Teammates Kevin Perez (9:45.65) and Joshua Mitchell (9:48.32) were eighth and ninth, respectively.

In the 200 meter dash, Jermaine Logan had a time of 22.43 to finish eighth in the field of 16. Ryan Hinton (22.81) and Brandon Suell (22.83) were 10th and 11th, respectively, and Derek Martin (23.75) placed 14th.

Suell also was 11th in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 11.00. Michael Wooten had a time of 2:10.23 to place 11th in the 800 meter dash, and the 400 meter relay team came in fourth with a time of 42.72.

The Lady Demons racked up 152.5 points in claiming the women’s division. Louisiana Tech (142) was second, Sam Houston State (114) was third, and Lamar (93) placed fourth. Stephen F. Austin State had 67 points to place fifth, and Louisiana-Lafayette (42) was sixth. The Lady Muleriders got 11 points in finishing seventh, while LSU (6), again with a partial squad, was eighth.

SAU got its points in the 3,000 meter run, with Kendall Mears (11:01.40) and Lindsay Musielak (11:15.33) placing third and fourth, respectively.

Chantel Scott had a 13th-place showing in the long jump with a leap of 15-4 ¾.

Southern Arkansas’ track teams will participate next Saturday in the Michael Johnson Classic at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
