MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas second baseman Skyler Stromsmoe took the next step in his baseball career Sunday, signing a professional contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Stromsmoe reported to the Giants’ Rookie League club in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday. He will remain with the Arizona Giants at least until after Major League Baseball’s draft and could possibly be moved in mid-June to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, the club’s single A team, in Keizer, Ore.
Stromsmoe stated that he will probably be used as a utility player and expects to spend time as a middle infielder and outfielder. “I don’t really care where they put me as long as I get to play,” said Stromsmoe, “I just want to make the most of the opportunity.”
A 5-10, 170-pound senior, Stromsmoe finished his SAU career this season hitting .330 from the leadoff spot for the Muleriders. He tied for the team lead with 12 doubles, and had three triples, two home runs, 37 RBI, and a team-leading 52 stolen bases in 55 attempts, which was second nationally in the NCAA Division II. Stromsmoe had a .963 fielding percentage from his second base position.
