Southern Arkansas’ Maag Awarded Gold Glove

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas centerfielder Tyler Maag has been named a member of the 2007 Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-South Central Region Gold Glove Team. The Gold Glove Team, along with the Rawlings/ABCA All-South Central Region Team, was announced Tuesday.

A 5-9, 180-pound sophomore from North Canton, Ohio, Maag was one of 11 players, and one of four outfielders, voted to the team. He had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in the outfield this season, making no errors in 92 chances. Maag led all Mulerider outfielders with 89 putouts, and had three assists.

A first-year player out of Cayuga (Ohio) Community College, Maag hit .363 for SAU this year, tying for the team lead with 12 doubles, and finished with two triples, seven home runs, and 35 RBI. He had a team-leading .599 slugging percentage, and was second in stolen bases with 15. The sophomore started 45 of the 52 games he played.

No Southern Arkansas player made the two-team All-South Central Region Team, which is voted on by the head coaches at the 36 institutions across the region.

Harding’s Justin Phillips was honored as the region’s Pitcher of the Year. A junior left-hander, he went 10-3 on the season with a 1.21 ERA. Phillips threw 96 1/3 innings on the season, recording 121 strikeouts to lead NCAA Division II.

Central Oklahoma’s Breck Draper received the Player of the Year honor. A junior catcher, he hit .353 in 57 games with 11 doubles, one triple, 20 home runs, and 70 RBI.
