CLEVELAND, Miss. – Southern Arkansas University’s Thanksgiving road trip wasn’t a pleasant one as the Lady Muleriders lost both Friday and Saturday’s games in the Delta State University Margaret Wade Memorial Classic. SAU fell in a tough double-overtime thriller to the University of West Georgia (3-1), 74-62, on Friday, and by 62-58 against Lemoyne-Owen (Tenn.) College (1-2) on Saturday. The Lady Muleriders (0-5) have not started a season winless in their first five games since the 1995-96 campaign when they began the year losing their first seven.

On Friday, SAU led by six points, 24-18, at halftime before UWG outscored the Lady Muleriders 31-25 in the second half to tie the game at 49-49 at the end of regulation. Both teams scored 11 points each to force the second overtime. The Lady Wolves showed no mercy and outscored the Lady Muleriders 14-2 to secure the victory.

Rita Grayson led West Georgia with a game-high 28 points, nine of 20 in shooting three of five at three-point range, and seven rebounds. Casey Murdock added 16 points and eight rebounds, with Valeisa Crenshaw adding 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Goldie White led Southern Arkansas with a team-high 25 points, five of 14 in shooting, five rebounds, and two assists. Brooke Grigsby had 13 points and five rebounds.

UWG shot 39.4 (26-66) percent from the field with SAU shooting 28.1 (18-64).

Southern Arkansas and Lemoyne-Owen were tied at 29-29 at the half on Saturday, but the Lady Magicians found enough tricks to pull out the win.

Shadonna Tate and Deanna Jennings scored a game-high 16 points each to lead LOC. Jennings also finished with a game-high 11 rebounds. Tiera Riley contributed 10 points.

Kayla Jones and White scored 12 points apiece to lead Southern Arkansas. Jones also finished with nine boards with White grabbing five. Kristina Gardner had 10 points and four rebounds.

Both teams shot poorly with the Lady Magicians making 35.5 percent from the field (22-62), and 33.3 in threes (3-9), and 71.4 in freebies (15-21).

The Lady Muleriders were 19 of 67 from the field (28.4 percent), eight of 20 at the three-point line (26.7 percent), and 12 of 16 at the charity strip (75 percent).

SAU returns home Tuesday to face West Alabama in a 6 p.m. match-up at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.
